NFL Owners Betting Big Money On Coaches With Past Success

The NFL has grown into a money machine and every aspect of the operation is commanding big money. From the stadium vendors through the players, workers are making more money than ever. Perhaps the biggest jump in salary, however, takes place within the coaching ranks.

Legendary coaches such as Tom Landry and Chuck Noll carried their teams to Super Bowl titles and were rarely paid equal to what they gave to their organizations. Today, coaches are commanding big money, and owners are paying it.

This off season, four of the most successful head coaches of the last twenty years are unemployed. Mike Holmgren has stepped aside in Seattle, Mike Shanahan has been fired in Denver, Marty Schottenheimer is still without a job, and Bill Cowher remains on the set at CBS.

These coaches will be sought by every team that fires their head coach in the near future. The calls have been coming to Cowher since he left the Steelers. He has yet to accept a job even though most organizations that have called have offered him everything just short of a piece of ownership.

Shanahan has been let go less than two weeks and already teams have called inquiring about his desire to still coach. The same can be said for Holmgren. With Schottenheimer, his name pops up on a yearly basis.

Owners not only want these big name coaches, they will pay for them. The high end coaches are now demanding over $5 million a year. Cowher may end up getting a contact that is worth more than $10 million.

It is not that Noll and Landry did not deserve the money, but their work has paved the way for coaches of today to finally be paid for the non stop work that they put into their jobs.
